Dry Skin (Xerosis)
Dry skin (xerosis), can be irritating and itchy. It can occur due to the loss of natural oils in the skin. It is often a recurring problem, especially in winter, when the air is drier.
Other causes of dry skin include excessive bathing (particularly with hot water), advancing age, several genetic or medical conditions, exposure to certain chemicals or drugs, or the use of drying soaps.
Management involves regular application of a moisturizer when your skin becomes dry. It is best applied within a few minutes after a shower or bath when your skin is still slightly damp. The drier the skin, the “thicker” the moisturizer should be (in order of increasing "thickness" - lotions, creams, ointments). Many over the counter formulations are available, including Vaseline Intensive Care, Lubriderm CeraVe, Cetaphil, Aveeno, and Eucerin creams and Aquaphor ointment.
Our office often has free samples available to try. In severe cases, we may recommend a urea- or lactic-acid-based prescription product.
